Reaching New Heights in Educational Innovation
Welcome to a significant highlight of my portfolio—the Pico Balloon Project.
This ambitious endeavor, undertaken with a talented team of students, aimed to break a world record by sending a micro-satellite into the stratosphere.
Our mission was not just about reaching new altitudes but also about inspiring and engaging thousands of students in the wonders of space technology and scientific experimentation. I'm proud to share how my contributions helped make this project a remarkable success.
The Pico Balloon Project marked the beginning of a groundbreaking journey for me and my team. Our goal was to design and launch a micro-satellite capable of capturing high-resolution images and videos from an astounding altitude of 147,648 feet. This project was part of the "SpaceUp Cyprus" event, organized by the Cyprus Space Foundation and supported by the Department of Meteorology and the Center of Excellence "Eratosthenes". It provided a unique platform for 27 public and private schools to showcase their experiments, reflecting our commitment to educational excellence and innovation. My role involved not only the technical aspects but also mentoring students, ensuring that our collective efforts led to a successful mission.
In February 2022, our team gathered at the Station of the Meteorology Department, ready to make history. The live broadcast of the launch allowed approximately 2,000 students to witness their experiments ascend to space altitudes, fostering a deeper connection with science and technology. I was instrumental in coordinating the launch procedures and ensuring that all technical systems functioned flawlessly. This event not only demonstrated our technical prowess but also underscored the importance of community and collaboration in achieving extraordinary feats.
A critical component of the Pico Balloon Project was effective communication between the micro-satellite and the ground. I integrated ASTRO, our advanced educational robot, to play a crucial role in this process. Equipped with sophisticated communication technology that I developed, ASTRO was responsible for receiving and transmitting all the data captured by the micro-satellite. This seamless exchange of information ensured that every image and video taken from the stratosphere was accurately relayed back to our team on Earth. Integrating ASTRO into the Pico Balloon Project demonstrated my ability to leverage robotics for enhanced data communication, ensuring the success and reliability of our high-altitude experiments.
